Striker’s Tales: 09.21.11
The Calgary trip was over and I dropped off the last of the bombers at Landyachtz longboards to pick up there cars. No rest for me I kept driving. In the Cariboo Momma striker is fighting cancer in Williams lake bc, so it was time to head up and start helping out more after this crazy summer we have had.
Packed with boo, food and a brand new lake fishing license I drove my baby Billie, momma Patricia and the crib-bomb back to Howes lake to meet our great grandpa on my dads side to do some fishing. We got momma striker and her three dogs out of the house and into the great outdoors. Momma striker enjoyed some baby Billie time and fresh air while me and grandpa enjoyed catching 7 fish as we shared story’s and taste tested all the colors of ice cold Cariboo. Nothing better than pan frying some small rainbow trout first thing in the morning with some garlic onion and a couple eggs…. and if your camping more ice cold Boo.
We enjoyed the hot September Cariboo sun in the days and huge Cariboo full moon or close to full fishing into the night. All in all great for my mom and the family to get out and fish. Grandpa would dock his boat yodeling. He would be singing the old songs he used to sing to pick up the ladies back on the 50s. loved it. Six days in the bush relaxing after a crazy British Columbia longboard race season was just what the doctor ordered. For all of us. Back in Toronto longtime friend and owner of concrete wave magazine mike Brooke was cooking up Vancouver’s first ever international longboarding trade expo and the first annual concrete wave evolutions longboarding film festival. This whole event was held at the international film center 1181 Seymour st downtown Vancity.
After school all the kids and parents came out check out all the longboarding companies booths with all the newest designs n gear. Venders were longboard companies from all over North America. Skull skates Canada’s first skateboard brand and company was out representing. California’s Sector9 and Loaded Longboards made the trip. New York’s Comet skateboards were out for the festivities. Landyachtz Longboards had a booth with a huge line up. They were raising money for this years push for the cure. kids were spinning the magic wheel by donation to win some unreal gear. Landyachtz raise $450 bucks for this years push in early October. Love that support. Fuck Cancer.
We had some of the biggest names in the industry show up for this crazy Friday night. The owner of Pacific Western Brewing was in to check out the night. One of my hero’s of downhill the legendary raining x games and gravity games gold medalist Californian local Biker Sherlock came out. I got his autograph naturally. Former world champion and team green captain scoot smith was there. Another former world champion also from Vancouver captain Canada Tom the Meatball Edstrand was there. World champion k-rimes with his area trucks and current world champion Patrick Switzer was there. Even speed parts Jim z and the Schnitzel arrived in a convertible. It was nuts the young kids were going bananas. Autographs being signed left right and center. It was fun for all. A total success.
After a day of representing on all sides Mike made me the host of the film festival so I made the trip back to Vancouver picked up a complete Cariboo longboard and some caribou wheels. Then I bought some Boo and made sure to welcome our guests from out of town properly. Then it was show time! I dressed up grabbed the mic and introduced the sponsors and the Evolutions 7 film fest. I gave out the Cariboo longboard to a lucky kid in the crowd with a lucky ticket stub.
Red curtain lifted above the huge $15 000 screen and everyone cheered. The show was on. It didn’t take long for some of the rowdy crowd to lose it. Then Heckling and the jokes from some of the crowd about push culture. Then a coffee cup of what was thought to be beer was chucked on the very expensive screen. The show continued until another couple beers got chucked up on the big screen. We had to stop the show and I had to get up and give the crowd a talking to but the damage was already done. After the first 7-9pm show Mike Brooke thinking he just lost $15 000 and wasn’t excited about the 9-11pm show. The international film center wanted to cancel the whole event over a couple of bad seeds. We were lucky to have the 9-11pm show and the show did go on. Mike had to pull me off the mc for the second show because he just wanted it all over. Who could blame him really, you try losing $15 000 in a split second when your trying to do something positive.
I will say this. Maybe we should have rented a big theater in east van where they just tell you to put out your weed and sell caribou beer. The Highway Gospel premiere was a gong show. But we were and are aloud back. The destruction wasn’t over yet. This shit hole yuppie bar next store on Davie and Seymour thought it was a good idea to have a bunch of crazy longboarders in for a karaoke after party.
Strike one was when they didn’t even know about karaoke. Strike two was the broken table, strike three was the guy that almost cut his hand off, strike four was the broken chair, strike five was all the broken glasses, strike six was the puke on the floor strike seven was Paul losing his cell phone and contacts, strike eight was this shit hole restaurant does not sell Cariboo, strike nine was sending twenty nine drunk longboarders to the next bar downtown Vancouver. Strike ten was wow you really think this yuppie bar can handle a full movie theater of crazy longboarders for an after party and think nothing was going to happen. Good try!
I tried to pull some strings by getting the mob into a strip club but it was Friday night and they were full. Then we went to Doolins they pulled a fast one on us and we never got in. what a waist of time. The whole time we should have known of the one place to go where we will be welcomed with open arms. Where they have the whole line up of Cariboo beers in cans and on tap. Where longboards don’t need to be skate checked. Where they have karaoke and punk rock, metal shows. A place you can smash a glass of beer off the wall and shot gun a beer! That place was Funky’s.
Once everyone got to Funky’s it was on. Caribou flying everywhere boards and bands! We had every right to celebrate this weekend. We had our first Longboarding film fest and our first ever longboarding expo. Great start to something good and this wont be the last.
Longtime Coast Longboarding filmer, editor and loose tooth drummer guff Mc Gufferson and I sat down for five hours and put together some of the footage I have of me this past summer before I collapsed a lung and broke helmet with four ribs. We added a few other shots from past years. Its only two minutes so enjoy! I don’t know how to drift or slide so when I say I risked my life for these shots know I really did.
So I’m back up in the Cariboo for now helping momma strike fight this shit hole cancer. I have sheep creek in my head. My board is leaning against the wall. My helmet is hanging off my board. The hills are calling. Again I will miss bombing the best hill in the world for the third straight year. I raced this hill two years in a row. Teutonia, Brazil. This year is the world championships. Best I hold back again to heal up extra good and heal my mom. But Teutonia is also on my mind!
Coming up is the Highway Gospel screening on Oct. 1st, don’t miss that night if your on the Sunshine Coast. Tell your friends. Then the Push For The Cure where longboarders will push from Hope, BC to Vancouver to raise awareness about breast cancer and raise funds to fight that crap. On a side note the Coast Longboarding community has helped raise over a million dollars in seven years… Dynamite!
