Striker's Tales

We made the local newspaper! Not quite the front cover like they promised me but none the less our outlaw race made it in the Williams Lake major newspaper and this is huge publicity for our underground grassroots snowboard race.

The Bull Mountain Boxing Day Boarders Cross Challenge was a great show of local snowboard racing talent but that didn’t fill my fix. I love putting on events bringing people together for a good time but after the Boxing Day race I need more. I needed more racers I needed more crashes and I needed more action! Action I got.

I quickly spread the word about the Bull Mountain Boarder Cross Challenge New Years Revenge Race. The Revenge race gave a chance for the snowboarders that were just to lazy, hung over after Christmas or off on a Boxing Day snowboarding trip to have another crack at the pot to see how they size up against local snowboard talent of all ages and shapes and sizes.

Huge thanks to our sponsors Landyachtz longboarding, Red Shreds bike and board shop, Diamond and dust Entertainment lounge, Cariboo Brewing and Coast Longboarding. We loaded the truck with a pile of prizes. Our sponsors gave us so many prizes we had enough for two races worth. Perfect for me and perfect for the riders participating.

Got to the race hill fashionably late of course and I wasn’t the only one. Trucks started pulling in and racers were geared up ready to race. I gathered everyone one together collected the cash yelled out the rules of the game and we got a shuttle truck and started climbing the mountain with everyone piled in the back of the truck. We filled the truck. We had way more racers than Boxing Day but fewer spectators. That’s fine spectators can sometimes cause problems and ask questions. I was too hung over to answer any questions.

Half way up the hill we spun out and had to back down the mountain. Of course another truck decided to come help us but only made things worse. I bet you know what happened. Buddy gets stuck behind us and gets stuck good. Deep in the ditch his left tires were totally buried front and back. He hammered on the gas and dug in a little more. He ended up getting pulled out by two of our race marshals on quads got to love the Caribou country but he didn’t come out of the ditch without a scratch. He totally dented his front fender and pissed off at that he punched a whole through his front windshield. Now his truck was messed up and he was bleeding.

We finally got the race under way and it was exciting to say the least. We had four ladies show up ready to race and a shit pile of guys. The racing all day was fast and tight. None of the racers form boxing day could make the race so we were lucky to have a whole new set of faces to enjoy a day of racing. Unlike Boxing Day the new years revenge race was full of old school Lakers and that made it really fun for everyone the atmosphere was chilled out the fire was burning and with not as many spectators nothing was rushed.

The man of the hour was local skater/snowboarder Chris Lamont. Nobody could touch this guy. He just dominated the hill the whole day. He won both races, the Boarder Cross Revenge race and the King of the Mountain race. In the finals I pulled out a pile of cash when everyone was loaded up in the shuttle truck I made the announcement that the “fastest racer of the day will hold the cash in his pocket for the finals.” Well this made everyone’s eyes pop out of there sockets when I gave the cash to Mr. Chris Lamont to hold. The heckling started, talk about a target on his back. Every racer was foaming at the mouth now.

Being an outlaw race I reminded everybody that I haven’t seen or heard of any dirty racing on the day and now’s the time to smash a friend in a snowy ditch or pull something crazy off the starting line. Again this didn’t help Chris the man with the winning cash in his pocket for the last race. The thought of dirty tricks really got the other racers making threats and laughing and pointing at Chris. “Were going to get ya!”

We dumped the camera crew along the 3km race track and started the race. Just like I predicted there was lots of contact, clutching and grabbing the whole way down. Ian Rankin a very strong snowboarder and racer took second place all day and as he battled Chris almost crashing himself third and fourth place were hoping for a crash that would never happen. Chris Lamont took 1st place, Ian Rankin took 2nd place and Brain Garten took a close 3rd. racing was tight and it came right down to the bitter end to find a champion. Chris took the Cash.

We shuttled everyone up tp the top of the hill for the king of the hill race and Chris took that race too winning a sick new complete Cariboo Longboard equipped with special edition Cariboo wheels. He was stoked. Second place Ian won a water ski and bear trucks and wheels to go with it. What a prize. Brian was happy about getting 3rd place I hooked him up with a sled full of all kinds of Boo! Everyone left with a prize and thanks Cariboo brewing for supplying the t-shirts, boo hoodies and hats they were wore with pride.
