Striker’s Tales: The Highway Gospel – Rocky Mountain Tour Pt.2
When traveling BC and Alberta make sure you pick the right route because there is lots of mineral hot springs that will fix your body right something that the first nations has done before us of many centuries.
As soon as we got out of the Hot Springs, off the mountain and back on the highway it was back to rolling. We were on our way to the Wizards place in Radium where the next set of Hot Springs are and between here there and everything in between we got a little skating in too!!
In British Columbia were allowed on the highways but you still need to wait your turn and that’s fine with us.
When skating through the Rocky Mountains Mike “Yardwaste” knows how you need to dress for skate trips like these. A nice warm loggers jacket and an Aero Helmet!
If you’re heading through the Golden BC route you need to stop at Red Tomato Pies!! The only two trips you’ll have the luxury to eat this snack is the Rocky Mountain Tour or the Sheep Creek for Speed Freaks tour!! Voted best pizza in Canada Two years in a row.
It’s a long drive to the “Wizard of Water and Wood” but it’s always worth it. Rolf has been a real inspiration to me in the last five years I’ve known him. I’m taking a few things he’s taught me to adding it to my life. The one thing he had figured out is money. It comes to him through the tourists. You can sit and watch him collect money in his home all day long, day in and day out throughout the summer without much effort. Try to buy art off the wall, he will complain and tell you not to buy it because he will need to make more. Nice problem to have. Build a tourist trap!
The last couple years we always miss Rolf’s parties but this year we rolled in just on time for one of his famous bashes. We made sure to hook up the host with a flat of Cariboo Genuine Beers and we handed out a whole bunch of Boo schwag to everyone at the party. Always a nice way to make an entrance! The entertainment was pro, fingers on the keyboard played till the sun came up I tell ya!
What a perfect way to top off the day after a huge drive, the crew got to let loose! You can yell, you can scream, you can dance, you can eat and enjoy Cariboo beers all night long all in the name of adventure and fun.
If you come to radium sometime do you think you have the guts to stop in and say hi to Rolf for a bit of a tour?!
We woke up parked at the church across the street from Rolfs place. Some of us slept in while others went for a skate on some unusual local paths near the church.
One thing you’ll notice while traveling through British Columbia and Alberta is the amount of trees killed by the pine beetle. The pine beetle is devastating our forests at an alarming rate and Cariboo Brewing is giving back by committing to plant a million trees by 2020. Any case of Cariboo Bought from now until they reach their goal of planting a million trees goes to planting a tree. Spread the word drink beer plant trees!! Sweet!
We decided to take a new highway this trip to mix things up. We heard from the locals that it’s a crazy pass and we were insane to even think of skating it. I’ve thought about hitting this area before but never have. This part of the highway is only open for a few months of the year. I guess snow is a huge problem, but that wasn’t going to stop us this time so just like Landyachtz we decided to skate and explore!
Well we got dooped!! This was the big hill?!? a 2 km 7% run that we drove right passed looking for the big hill. There was no big pass, no big drop but the drive was certainly beautiful. It was a bit of a let down after getting all excited hoping for the golden hill excellence but hey!! We got to skate with some wild cows!!
Some breath taking country we have here in our province I tell ya! Don’t forget to explore it this summer; all Canadian national parks are free!
One thing about traveling B.C. in the summer you can still find snow to chill your beer if you know where to look. You cant tell me this beer don’t look good!
This new Cariboo board looks good too!
Even though it was a crappy little hill some of the guys wanted to skate, it doesn’t always need to be a crazy hill to have fun and enjoy the skate. When do you ever run into conditions like these and a chance to skate surrounded by mountains breathing in some of the freshest air on earth up here in the great white north.
We kept exploring and we just let Cariboo lead the way!!
You gotta love hill hunting!! You just never know what you’re going to find next on these unknown roads.
Lots of driving and a huge day of skating and exploring! it was time for a late night soak in the Banff National Park hot spring to clean up the smelly crew. I love this trip for that, we do a lot of hot springs soaking keeping everyone clean!!
After the soak we headed over to Bruno’s downtown Banff!! Love that they sell Cariboo beer! Nothing better on the road then enjoying some live music and being able to buy some ice cold Cariboos!! Even the beer store in Banff sells Cariboo! Cariboo in Alberta!!
I never get to sleep in when we stay in Banff because soon as the clock strikes five in the morning I fire up the Cribb and we climb to the top of Norquay. I yell and scream pounding the music all the way up the mountain. I make sure to wake up everyone to let them know what they are missing. Ill give them shit the whole way up the hill if they are trying to sleep in. This is the whole reason why were here, it’s to skate so sometimes we need to sacrifice sleep and if I need to wake up early then you better be ready to skate!
You get a couple runs in the dark but we pushed our luck and ran as many as we could before we needed to split. You don’t want to get caught by the parks crew because they don’t like skaters on this hill, Laine made friends with a nice guardrail on this run a few weeks before we touched down here. I made sure to scare the crew into keeping within their limits, having the thought of pain in the backs of their minds normally keeps them honest.
The tour didn’t stop there and this was the start of another huge day for us on tour. Man we jammed as much as you can jam into a six-day trip. Don’t miss these trips, if there isn’t a race on a weekend then you know we’re off on some sort of adventure.
We get to drink Cariboo beer in the best parts of Western Canada, on the best longboard tours taking us to places we never knew existed.
Then it was back on the highway to skate a quick spooky run in some pure BC fog.
Then it was on! We got out of the clouds and back in the Banff National Park but this time we decided to head up to Jasper National Park to get some more action up there! We went to a hill I haven’t skated in years but she’s a monster and a classic!
When we got to Jasper National Park there’s a run that I’m not suppose to drive the RV up because the turns are way too tight for a 33 foot RV, but this time I decided to drive up it anyways. There were a few spots I needed to make a couple two point turns but that wasn’t too bad, it was nice to finally check out this run for the first time since 2001 for me. The couple runs after that though Chase and Mike hitched up, they move too fast down that tight road for me to be able to catch any good shots of the action so I take this time to close my eyes for twenty while I can.
Jasper is always full of wildlife including us if you wanna good chance at seeing some real life Canadian animals this is your trip!! Just be careful you never know when vacations attack!
Wild animals and wild hills!!
Now it was time to throw Bam Bam down some hills so I thought this one would be a nice test for the old guy. Nothing like some guardrails on the outside of the corners and standing tall to keep you biting your lip.
It was a humongous day of driving for me and skating for them, the day started at 5:00am it was a fifteen or sixteen hour day. That night we all got a good sleep, morning came quick and we were back at it again getting as much as we could.
Stumanchu jumped on his board for a leg burner!
We hit up Revelstoke BC and Mike Yardwaste dodged a bullet here. We ran into a local guy that was stoked on downhill, he was already hill bombing around on his pintail so we gave him a chance to ride with the best.
It was refreshing to see a guy on a hill that he might not really have any business up there skating. He had a really cool style, a dangerous sketchy foot brake and a big set of balls to run your pintail down this run. He held his own but don’t pretend I wasn’t waiting for a crash!
Bam hooked him up with some gloves, this will change everything for the guy now. He was stoked on the new gloves and went for it!! We saw the change from the top half of the hill to the bottom half. The gloves were all this guy needed next time we run into him he’s going to be a full on hill killer!! We hooked him up with a bunch of Cariboo shwag and gear because he was the most stoked rider we ran into all trip!
It was on this trip about two in the morning on our way home that I finally realized that Coast Longboarding has done everything it can here in the west and it was time to take over the east. Stumanchu listened in the front seat while I thought out loud all the way home…….
